Domestic violence against pregnant women\u00a0remains a leading cause of injury \u2014 and often death \u2014 for expecting mothers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A terrified woman told deputies that she had just learned she was pregnant \u2014 and was punched in the stomach by her partner when she woke up that morning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The allegation came through a\u00a0<\/span>third-party welfare check<\/span><\/b>, prompting deputies to rush to the residence in\u00a0<\/span>Lawrence County<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to make sure the woman was safe. She told the responding\u00a0officer\u00a0her partner,\u00a0<\/span>Jerry Newcomb<\/span><\/b>, struck her repeatedly in the abdomen during an argument \u2014 using a closed fist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Shaken\u00a0and frightened, she said she\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0count how many times she\u00a0was hit. She still asked the deputy to press charges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Violent Struggle During Arrest<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Inside the home, the deputy informed\u00a0Newcomb\u00a0he was under arrest. Instead of complying, Newcomb allegedly\u00a0<\/span>grabbed onto a bed frame<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and refused to release it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The deputy warned him multiple times to obey commands, but Newcomb continued to resist, leading the officer to deploy a\u00a0<\/span>taser<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to gain control. Even after falling to the ground, Newcomb refused to place his hands behind his back. The deputy\u00a0ultimately had\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>activate the taser several times<\/span><\/b>\u00a0before he was able to handcuff Newcomb and take him into custody.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Newcomb was transported to\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Lawrence\u00a0County Jail<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to face charges related to the violent attack.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
