1 Week After Domestic Violence Arrest, Woman Found Hiding Under Tarp During Protection Order Violation

A domestic dispute turned into a strange game of hide-and-seek when deputies responding to a call discovered a suspect hiding under a tarp — just days after she had already been arrested in a similar case. According to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to South Point for a domestic violence complaint involving a suspect who was reportedly barred from contacting the victim due to a recently issued protection order. When deputies arrived, an officer with the South Point Police Department was already on scene assisting. Authorities noted that law enforcement had responded to another domestic incident at the same residence earlier in the week where the same suspect had been arrested. Deputies spoke with the complainant, who said her girlfriend arrived at the residence intoxicated and began causing problems. She told deputies the woman was not supposed to be there because a temporary protection order had been issued following the previous domestic violence case. The complainant said when she called 911, the suspect pushed her in the chest with both hands, knocking her down. While deputies began investigating, the woman said the suspect was inside the bedroom. However, when officers entered the home to locate her, the room was empty. Officers were told the suspect may have exited through the front door. When deputies stepped outside to check the porch area, something unusual caught their attention. A dog was barking near a tarp covering what appeared to be a lawn mower. Looking closer, deputies noticed a pair of shoes sticking out from beneath the tarp. Officers ordered the person underneath to come out, and the suspect complied. She appeared to be visibly intoxicated and was taken into custody. During the arrest, deputies said the suspect became aggressive while seated in the back of the patrol vehicle. She repeatedly kicked the prisoner cage and struck her head against it, ignoring commands to stop. Deputies transported her to the Lawrence County Jail, where she continued to act combative during the ride. Authorities say the woman repeatedly stated she had just gotten out of jail for the same thing and insisted she had only returned to the residence to retrieve her belongings. She was booked into the jail on Domestic Violence and Violation of a Protection Order charges. Court records show the woman had been charged with domestic violence just a week earlier, at which time she was appointed a public defender and a temporary protection order was issued. However, during her March 9 arraignment in Lawrence County Municipal Court, the protection order was later dismissed at the request of the woman who originally filed it. The domestic violence case remains active, with a pretrial hearing scheduled for March 23.
