117 Dangerous Hand Sanitizers

Quick, check your hand sanitizer labels! The FDA just updated the list of hand sanitizers it says are too dangerous to use. Some contain dangerous levels of methanol or wood alcohol. Others have such low levels of alcohol that they are not effective at sanitizing hands.

Wood alcohol is used to create fuel and antifreeze. It is not a safe active ingredient for hand sanitizer products. States have also reported incidents of people suffering blindness, hospitalization, and death after ingesting sanitizer with methanol.

According to the FDA “Methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although people using these products on their hands are at risk for methanol poisoning, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute are most at risk.”

There’s been a huge uptick in demand for hand sanitizer due to COVID-19. Many of these products were imported from Mexico.

If you have any of the products listed, do not use them. Dispose of them in a hazardous waste container. Do not flush them down the toilet or dump them down a drain or sewer.
