125,000 Refugees will be taken in by the Biden Administration.

In a report to Congress, the White House stated that conflicts, humanitarian crises, and climate change had caused unprecedented numbers of people to be displaced worldwide.

According to officials, they intend to increase refugee imports to 125,000 by Oct. 1, which is the first day of the new fiscal year.

Among the groups that the administration said it would focus on are Central Americans, Afghans at risk because of their ties to the United States, and members of Muslim groups who are targeted by the Chinese government. Officials also mentioned members of the LGBT communities around the world who were in danger from various regimes.

Donald Trump limited refugee numbers to 15,000, the lowest since the Refugee Act went into effect in 1980. When he declined to raise it immediately upon taking office, President Joe Biden faced criticism. He finally updated the number to 62,500.

Biden is expected to fall short of that goal by the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30, despite recent evacuations from Afghanistan.

In short, the administration did not make good on the first promise and decided to go “double or nothing” for the next year.
