1810 House: Scioto County Teen Preserves Local History
Gary Jenkins is an upcoming high school senior currently attending Portsmouth West High School that has been involved in the local Boy Scout troop 43 in Friendship, OH for many years. He is now working towards ascending to the rank of Eagle Scout, and in order to do so, he must lead a community service project of his choosing.
The project that Mr. Jenkins has chosen to undertake is the restoration of a historic Portsmouth building known as the “1810 House”. The house is named for the fact that it was built originally by Aaron Kinney in 1810, making it one of the oldest homes in Scioto County.
Over the years, various additions and restorations have been performed on the house in order to maintain it, including an east addition and a major remodeling that faced the front of the home towards the street, which didn’t exist when the home was first built.
Gary’s remodeling includes repainting the home and storage shed, installing air conditioners, and power washing the outside of the home. These additions will make the home more aesthetically pleasing while also adding modern amenities to the home.
