2 A.M. Lawnmower Patrol Ends With Warning From Deputies

Most people expect to see a lawnmower cutting grass. Not cruising down the road at 2 o'clock in the morning while allegedly flashing lights into people's homes. That's what prompted a call to the Scioto County Sheriff's Office from West Portsmouth. According to dispatch traffic, a caller reported a man riding a lawnmower through the area while using a strobe light that was shining into nearby houses. Deputies responded to investigate. 🚜 THE MIDNIGHT MOWER MYSTERY When deputies arrived at the suspect's residence, they attempted to make contact. According to the report, the man refused to come to the door. That didn't stop deputies from delivering a message. The deputy reportedly advised the man through a window that if he was caught riding the lawnmower on the roadway, the mower could be impounded. No charges were filed, and the incident ended with a warning. ⚖️ CAN YOU LEGALLY DRIVE A RIDING LAWNMOWER ON THE ROAD? Generally speaking, a riding lawnmower is designed for mowing grass—not cruising public streets. While laws can vary depending on the circumstances and location, lawnmowers typically: Are not registered as motor vehicles Do not carry license plates Lack required safety equipment Are not designed for highway use That means taking one onto public roadways can create legal problems, especially at night. Golf carts, side-by-sides, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles have their own rules as well. In many cases, additional permits, inspections, insurance, or equipment are required before they can legally operate on public roads. 🏠 THE "GOOD NEIGHBOR" RULE Even when something isn't technically illegal, it can still be a bad idea. Few things are likely to make neighbors happy at 2 a.m.: Loud engines Bright lights Strobe lights Random lawnmower patrols Most neighborhood disputes start small and grow over time. Being considerate of sleeping neighbors is often the easiest way to avoid becoming the subject of a sheriff's report. 👀 NO TICKETS, JUST A WARNING In this case, deputies never actually caught anyone riding the mower on the roadway. The man remained inside the residence and no enforcement action was taken. Still, somewhere in West Portsmouth, residents can probably rest easier knowing the Sheriff's Office has officially discouraged late-night lawnmower adventures.
