A longtime Scioto County Sheriff’s Office employee is taking over leadership of the county jail.
Sheriff David Thoroughman has promoted Danny Malone to the rank of captain over the jail and formally swore him into the new position.
Malone has spent 28 years with the Sheriff’s Office, working in several different parts of the agency along the way.
His career has included patrol, supervising inside the jail, detective work, and maintenance.
That broad background now puts him in charge of the Corrections Division.
What Does the Jail Captain Do?
Running the Scioto County Jail involves a lot more than simply making sure the doors stay locked.
The jail captain oversees the day-to-day operation of the facility and supervises both staff and inmates while making sure the jail operates under Ohio standards.
That includes responsibilities such as:
- Overseeing jail staff and daily inmate operations
- Making sure prisoners are fed and meals are properly prepared
- Coordinating inmate transportation
- Helping oversee court security
- Making sure policies and safety procedures are followed
It is a job that touches almost every part of the criminal justice system once someone is arrested.
Years of Experience
The Sheriff’s Office said Malone’s experience in several different roles gives him a strong understanding of how the agency works as a whole.
Thoroughman praised Malone’s work ethic, dedication, and service to Scioto County, saying those qualities earned him the promotion.
The Sheriff’s Office said it expects Malone to bring the same professionalism and commitment to the jail that he has shown throughout his career.
After nearly three decades working just about everywhere in the agency, Malone now takes on one of its biggest day-to-day responsibilities:
Keeping the county jail running.
