4 Things To Buy At Walmart (and 1 to Skip)

There are 4 things you absolutely should buy at Walmart and 1 I’d suggest you bypass at any cost. Hey, we all know that Walmart is famous for its low, low prices, spotty service, and an entertaining customer base. We all know the old saying, “You get what you pay for.” While some of Walmart’s low prices equate to low quality, I’ve got a few Walmart brands I think are as good a quality as big brands or maybe even better. Let’s break them down.

Great Value Freezer Bags

Great Value freezer bags are oftentimes less than half the cost of big-brand competitors like Hefty and Glad.  But do they do the job? I’ve found both the gallon and quart sizes to be very dependable. Unlike some store brands – I’m calling you out Meijer – they do not split or rip.

I don’t just use them in the freezer. The quart-size bags are perfect for sandwiches, produce, repackaging deli lunch meat and cheese, and even to use for travel. I’ve stored everything from soap to socks in them with great success. I have no qualms suggesting you pick up a 75-pack of both quart and gallon bags to keep in your pantry.

Great Value Butter

Walmart butter is one of the best buys out there. They carry unsalted butter in their store brand which not every grocery store does. It’s normally about a dollar a pound cheaper than big brands. Keep an eye out for sales, though. That’s when I grab a whole bunch of them for baking.

Butter freezes beautifully, so I just slip the packages inside one of those freezer bags I told you about earlier and stack them up in my freezer.

Great Value Heavy Whipping Cream

My other favorite daily item at Walmart is heavy cream. They offer the Great Value brand in quart-sized containers, which not every store does. I use cream in my coffee, for cooking, and in baking, so the big size comes in handy. Again, Walmart cream comes in at usually a dollar or less per quart than the big name brands.

It has good butterfat content and will keep in the fridge for a pretty long time until the clock starts ticking when you open it. I also like the side pour spout.

Great Value Frozen Tail-On Deveined Shell-On Shrimp

Yeah, I know, shrimp is probably not on the list when you think about what to buy at Walmart. Hey, if you live near the coast, get freshly-caught shrimp. If you don’t, all of the shrimp you’re getting is frozen anyway. Even if it’s in a fresh seafood counter, that just means they thawed it out.

I’m specific about the type to get here. I don’t like precooked shrimp because it always ends up overcooked when you warm it up. I say to get the shell-on because it is so much more flavorful. The shell will protect the shrimp while you cook it and also add delicious flavor to it. You can also use the shells to make stock.

Because the backs are already split and the vein is taken out (BTW, that vein is actually a digestive track full of poop) it’s incredibly each to peel after cooking. The shell comes right off.  A 2lb bag costs less than $12.  Try getting two pounds of shrimp out for $12.  Since there are only two of us in my house, I usually separate that 2 lb bag out into freezer bags for multiple servings.

But I sure don’t love everything at Walmart. Now that I’ve shared what to buy at Walmart, ready to find out the one thing you should leave on the shelf?

Great Value Everyday White Forks

If you want to find a great, cheap plastic fork, this is not it. Oddly, my only complaint is with the white forks. The clear ones seem to work just fine. The white ones, in my experience, will break apart if you attempt to eat anything stronger than Jell-O.  I cannot tell you the number of fork tines that have ended up on my plate and in my mouth. Yeah, I know they are bad for the environment and I probably deserve to suffer for using them.

Again, it’s never the clear ones. Always the white ones. They are a pretty good value, you get 100 of them for around three bucks. Although, normally by the time I get to the end of the meal, they look more like chopsticks.
