5 Ways to Stay Cool Without an Air Conditioner

With the longest sustained stretch of hot temperatures so far this summer in the forecast, many folks are probably ready to crank up the air conditioning to stay cool. But what about those who don’t have air conditioning? We’ve got 5 tips to stay cool when the temperature rises.

1. Drink plenty of water: It’s important to stay hydrated when it’s hot outside. Drinking water throughout the day can help regulate your body temperature and prevent heat exhaustion. And make it water! Drinks like coffee, pop, or energy drinks with caffeine can raise your body temperature.

 2. Keep your blinds closed: Sunlight can quickly heat up a room. By keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the day, you can prevent the sun from turning your home into an oven. If there’s a particularly sunny window, consider handing up a dark blanket to blot out the sun.

3. Use fans: Fans are a great way to circulate air and create a cooling breeze. Place a fan near an open window to bring in cool air from outside, or position one in front of you to create a personal breeze. Put a bowl of ice in front of your fan to provide extra cooling.

4. Take cool showers: A cool shower can help lower your body temperature and provide some much-needed relief from the heat. Try taking a quick shower or bath before bed to help you sleep more comfortably. You can also apply cool washcloths to your next during the course of the day to help lower your body temperature.

5. Use natural fabrics: Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon can trap heat and make you feel even hotter. If you have them available in your wardrobe, opt for natural fabrics like cotton or linen, which are breathable and can help keep you cool.

Now, some folks like to dampen sheets and pillowcases and freeze them during the day for a cool night’s sleep. Many experts actually recommend against the practice. As your sheets melt, they’ll bring moisture onto your body, which can actually pull heat from the air and make you warmer.

These tips are helpful, but if your home gets too hot, your best bet is to leave. Go to a friend or family member’s home or to a cooling center.
