$50,000 for Marting’s Asbestos Cleanup – Tax Advance From County on Council Agenda for Monday

During Monday’s Portsmouth City Council meeting, council members will have the first reading of an ordinance asking the Scioto County Treasurer to give them an advance payment of all taxes estimated owed to the city in the current budget.

While this sounds on paper like the council is hitting the county up for a payday loan, this procedure is actually outlined in Ohio Revised Code section 321.34 and happens in cities all over the state. The money will come from estimated real estate taxes, cigarette taxes, special assessments, and classified taxes.

The city will also vote on putting up the $50,000 in matching funds necessary to receive a $151,000 grant for removing asbestos from the former Marting’s building. That $50,000 will be paid by the building’s owner and passed through to the city.
