911 Call Turns Into Porch Fight, Arrest, and Pepper Spray

What began as a call for help from a father reporting he was being assaulted quickly turned into a chaotic arrest that involved a struggle inside the home, pepper spray, and an attempted escape from handcuffs. According to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence after a man called 911 to report that his daughter had been attacking him. When deputies arrived, they found the caller waiting on the front porch. He told officers that his daughter had been assaulting him throughout the day. The man said she punched him in the face and struck him with a broom, and that part of the assault occurred while he was on the phone with 911. He told deputies the attack may have been captured on the recorded emergency call. Deputies then entered the residence to locate the suspect. When officers opened the screen door, the woman attempted to shut the interior door on them before running deeper into the house. Deputies ordered her to stop, but she continued toward the back of the home in what appeared to be an attempt to flee. Officers caught up with her near the back door as she tried to unlock it. When deputies attempted to take her into custody, she immediately began physically resisting, pulling away from officers and refusing commands to place her hands behind her back. A struggle followed near the back door as she continued trying to get out of the house. Deputies eventually placed her in handcuffs and escorted her outside, but the struggle continued. While being taken to the patrol vehicle, the woman repeatedly dropped her body weight and pulled away from officers, refusing to get into the cruiser. Deputies ultimately had to physically pull her into the back seat. During the confrontation, pepper spray was deployed to gain compliance and prevent further resistance or possible injury to officers. Even after being secured inside the cruiser, the situation wasn’t over. While deputies were speaking with the victim, officers discovered the woman had slipped out of her handcuffs while seated in the patrol vehicle. Deputies returned to the cruiser and secured her again. Authorities noted that removing the handcuffs after being placed under arrest constituted escape from lawful detention. The father later provided a sworn written statement reiterating that his daughter punched him and struck him with a broom while he was on the phone with 911. He told deputies he wanted to pursue charges and asked the court to issue a protection order preventing her from returning to the home. The suspect was transported to the Lawrence County Jail, where officers discovered she also had two active warrants through the county court.
