New details are emerging about the search for Jeremy Copas, the man officials say jumped from an ambulance while being transported from the Scioto County Jail to the hospital.
Officers originally arrested Copas Friday afternoon on an open warrant at Taco Bell and booked him into the Scioto County Jail.
According to officials, Copas had been in custody on a bench warrant for failing to appear in court on a misdemeanor criminal trespassing charge. He was later granted a conditional release to receive medical treatment and was supposed to return to jail afterward.
But on Saturday afternoon, while being transported to Southern Ohio Medical Center, officials said Copas jumped from the ambulance and ran.
The search quickly spread through Portsmouth.
Police later received reports that Copas had been spotted walking around Thomas Avenue and then running on Robinson Avenue. Officers found what appeared to be his shirt in Farley Square but could not immediately locate him.
About 15 minutes later, a woman in Farley Square called police and reported that Copas had run into her home and pushed her down. Medics were called for the woman, but she did not need to go to the hospital.
Around 8:30 p.m., Copas was spotted near Oasis Convenient Mart on 17th Street with his girlfriend.
When he saw officers, police said he took off running again.
He was then spotted inside the fence line at Woodbine Apartments. Officers searched the area and thought they had located him in an abandoned house behind the complex, but the man refused to respond to commands.
Another officer then spotted Copas running behind Sunset Bowling Lanes and up onto Kendall Avenue.
Officers deployed a Taser and took Copas back into custody.
Copas was booked into the Scioto County Jail on charges of failure to appear, aggravated burglary, obstructing official business, resisting arrest, and escape.
He appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court, where a pretrial hearing was set for July 16.
The charges are allegations. Copas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
