ATV Chase Ends With Taser, Drugs, and Another Court Date

A late-night ATV ride through West Portsmouth ended with a foot chase, a Taser deployment, drug charges, and another court appearance for a man with a lengthy history of traffic offenses. Scioto County Sheriff's deputies first spotted a blacked-out ATV traveling on Calvert's Lane around 9:30 p.m. 🚨 ATV TAKES OFF When deputies activated their lights and sirens, the driver refused to stop. According to dispatch traffic, the ATV sped through the area, running multiple stop signs near 14th and 16th Streets. Deputies reported speeds ranging from 25 to nearly 40 miles per hour as the pursuit continued through neighborhood streets. 🏃 DRIVER DITCHES ATV The chase eventually came to an end near the dead end of 17th Street. That's when the driver reportedly jumped off the ATV and took off running. The foot pursuit was short-lived. A deputy deployed a Taser and took the suspect into custody. Medics were called to the scene to remove the Taser probes. 🚓 DRUGS FOUND, ATV TOWED After the arrest, deputies arranged to have the ATV towed from the scene. According to the report, officers also discovered drugs on the suspect. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was contacted regarding a possible impaired driving investigation, but troopers were unavailable to respond. ⚖️ MULTIPLE CHARGES FILED Deputies arrested Waylon Holbrook on charges of: Failure to Comply with the Order or Signal of a Police Officer Drug Possession Driving Under Suspension Unsafe Operation Holbrook was booked into the Scioto County Jail. 👨⚖️ RELEASED AFTER COURT APPEARANCE Holbrook later appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court. Court records show he was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on July 28. 📋 A FAMILIAR NAME IN TRAFFIC COURT Court records show Holbrook has accumulated a lengthy history of traffic-related offenses over the years. Those records include: Driving an ATV in a prohibited place Giving false information to law enforcement Distracted driving Multiple OVI convictions Driving under suspension Speeding violations The latest incident adds another chapter to that record. 🚦 ATVs AND PUBLIC ROADS Ohio law generally prohibits ATVs from operating on public roadways unless specifically authorized by local governments. In addition to registration and equipment requirements, ATV operators can face the same criminal penalties as other motorists when they flee from police, drive under suspension, or possess illegal drugs. In this case, what started as deputies spotting a dark ATV on a West Portsmouth road ended with a Taser deployment, a tow truck, and a trip to jail.
