Barefoot on Christmas Eve: Good Samaritans Protect Autistic Child Until Help Arrives

Will Robinson

A frightening situation on Christmas Eve ended safely thanks to the quick action and compassion of Good Samaritans who refused to look the other way.

Officers were called to the intersection of Grant and Garfield Streets around 3:30 p.m. after a caller reported a small child running down the street barefoot. Temperatures were cold, and the child had no shoes, socks, or warm clothing.

Two citizens had already stepped in before police arrived. They found the blonde juvenile running eastbound on Grant Street, quickly wrapped the child in a blanket to keep them warm, and stayed with them until help arrived.

Officers learned the child was nonverbal and autistic, making the situation even more urgent and complex. A local mail carrier also assisted, telling officers he recognized the child and believed the juvenile lived nearby on Grant Street.

Police were able to locate the child’s mother, who responded to the scene.

Officers attempted to contact Children’s Services through dispatch, but were unable to reach anyone at that time.

While police worked to sort out next steps, it was the actions of everyday neighbors that made the biggest difference. Their willingness to stop, protect a vulnerable child, and provide warmth likely prevented a far worse outcome.
