Bernice Howard, 90

Bernice Howard, 90, peacefully departed this life on February 19, 2021, surrounded by family at home in South Shore, KY.

Bernice was born on April 10, 1930, in Leatherwood, KY, to the late Lawrence and Bertha (Wolfe) Greene. She was a pillar of her community, serving for 48 years at Howard’s Grocery. Her customers became her family, and her store a common ground, where all were cared for and hardships unburdened.

When she wasn’t hard at work in her store, Bernice enjoyed hosting dinners and holiday events for her family and friends, attending Brushart Free Will Baptist Church, and taking a drive out on “the hill’.

Bernice is survived by her son Ishmel Dale (Connie) Howard of South Shore, and daughter Tammy (JB) Hall of South Shore; her grandchildren, Stephanie (Jeff) Sparks of South Shore, Robert Dale (Rachael) Howard of South Shore, William Wesley Claxon of South Shore, and step-granddaughter, Jessica (Robert) Womack, of Greenup, KY; six great-grandchildren: Jeffrey (Jordan) Scott Sparks, Keith Walker Sparks, Ella Elizabeth Howard, William Grayson Howard, Everett Lawrence Howard, Holden Ellis Howard, and two step-great-grandsons, Kyle and Ryan Womack; two great-great grandkids Reagan Jane Sparks and Lincoln Scott Sparks; two sister-in-laws Gertie Green and Catherine Greene; a very special niece and nephew Homer and Cherie Royster; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, William Henry Howard; her parents, Lawrence and Bertha (Wolfe) Greene; seven brothers: Ollie, Ishmel, Wedsel, Ferrell, Ezra, Douglas, and Austin Greene; and one sister, Beatrice Warnock.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 23rd, at the Morton-Hunt Family Funeral Home in South Shore, by Reverend Robert Thompson. Friends and family may call from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery on Zion Ridge in Greenup County. As a result of state guidelines due to COVID-19 face coverings and social distancing will be required. The funeral service will be available live stream at greenupbeacon.com
