Bizarre Gas Station Robbery in Wheelersburg
Crooks managed to rob a Wheelersburg gas station over the phone using a combination of common scam techniques.
Just after 5 am on Thursday, the station manager contacted the police to report that a clerk was robbed over the phone.
The upset clerk had locked the store and was crying. Scammers pretending to be from the fire department called the clerk and said they were coming down for an inspection and needed her to transfer cash to them.
She followed instructions from the crooks and put the cash from the register drawer into an ATM at the station, converted it to Bitcoin, and transferred it to the account provided before realizing she’d been scammed.
The manager and officers headed to the scene. Police took information for a report.
