Portsmouth police were called just after 1 a.m. today to perform a welfare check on a resident of the Kent Street Apartments.
Earlier in the day, a welfare check had been conducted and no one answered the door. The person who was concerned traveled from Columbus to meet the police and check on the occupant by bringing a copy of the key.
Unfortunately, the occupant was deceased. Squad 2 of the Portsmouth Fire Department responded to attend to any other possible medical emergencies.
Approximately 30 minutes after receiving the initial call, Detectives from Portsmouth Police began the death investigation.
The Ohio BCI was contacted early on in the investigation for forensic assistance based on evidence gathered earlier in the investigation. A team of detectives remains at the scene as of now.
A name has not been released for the deceased. An investigation is ongoing, and no cause of death has been determined
