Body Discovered on Kent Street — Coroner Called to Investigate

A grim discovery on Kent Street Tuesday prompted a police and coroner’s investigation after a caller found their co-worker deceased inside a residence.

Officers and Portsmouth EMS responded to the scene after the 911 call came in. Medics confirmed that the individual had passed away, and a physician at Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) officially fixed the time of death.

As officers began their investigation, the deceased’s next of kin arrived at the scene and were notified of the tragedy. Detectives were called in to review the circumstances, and the Scioto County Coroner’s Office dispatched a transport to take possession of the body. Police documented the scene and took information for a report.

Why the Coroner Gets Involved

While hearing that the coroner has been called can sound alarming, officials emphasize that a coroner’s investigation doesn’t automatically mean foul play is suspected.
In Scioto County, the coroner is required to investigate any unattended or unexplained death — including natural causes, overdoses, and accidents — to ensure the cause and manner of death are properly documented.

It’s a process meant to bring answers, not assumptions, and provide closure for families in difficult moments like this one.
