Plane Crash in Scioto County
Just after 11 am, calls came into the 911 dispatch center about smoke seen in the woods.
There was no street or location given.
More calls from golfers from at the Elks Country Club stated the airplane seemed to be a military aircraft.
Indianapolis Traffic Control officials also contacted Scioto County Sherrif to advise that they lost an aircraft.
Witness say the plane may be located at the end of Sheep Ranch Hollow.
Witnesses continue to call about the incident, helping authorities locate the plane.
An OSP helicopter took off to help locate. They were able to find the craft and call in the exact coordinates. They observed the plane was still on fire and could see flames.
At this time, first responders are trying to climb the steep embankment. OSP helicopter pilots are helping navigate the search party on the ground.
After further communication, it appears to be a 4 passenger private plane.
They were being tracked by air traffic control in Indianapolis.
Once first responders finally made it to the scene, they determined there could be no survivors. They asked if Huntington Traffic Control or anyone had a manifest of how many people were on board.
They asked for the FAA to be informed. As the smoke cleared, the helicopter was able to identify the airplane as a 2015 Lancair Evolution. Here is the actual plane.
The volunteer firefighters are unable to get trucks or water tanks to the crash site. They are using fire extinguishers and handheld water packs. They were advised by the OSP helicopter that the plane uses jet fuel and to use caution.
At this time, they are requesting mutual aid to acquire 20 more fire extinguishers. Firefighters on the ground said, “That will be a good start”. They expect more extinguishers will be needed.
The plane was traveling at 25,000 feet and going 242 miles per hour at 10:45 a.m., according to flight records. A few minutes later, the speed started to slow down, the plane started to make a hard left turn, and began descending quickly, before crashing.
A representative from the Scioto County Coroner’s office is now on the scene.
The scene is now being protected by the OSP and ODNR so local responders can return to duty. They are currently waiting on representatives from the FAA or NTSB to process the scene. From there, we will be able to determine the cause of the accident and how many victims were involved.
Update at 2:40 pm: A source at the scene has told SCDN that there were 2 passengers aboard the plane. Both were killed in this wreck.
