Breaking – Police Standoff in Wheelersburg 

Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputies surrounded a home on Bussey Road after a report of a standoff with a 28-year-old Wheelersburg man believed to be armed with a gun on Monday evening.  

Officers moved the man’s mother from the house and set up a perimeter blocking off the road. Portsmouth Police Officers also responded to the home as Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman took charge at the scene. Police also requested medics from Vernon Township to stand by in case they were needed.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, but according to scanner traffic, the phone rang once and went straight to voicemail.  

At one point, multiple officers reported hearing gunshots coming from inside the home. Police eventually made entry and took 28-year-old Zachary Cunningham into custody.  

There are no reports of injuries. No word on what prompted the standoff, which lasted about 90 minutes.
