Bryan Christopher “Chris” Wright, 54, of Winder, GA, a Portsmouth native, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Chris was born in Portsmouth on February 22, 1969, to Beecher Emory Wright and Anise Susan Boggs, both of whom survive.

Chris was a 1987 Portsmouth High School graduate, and he attended Shawnee State University, where he was a member of the golf team. He was a Navy veteran of the Gulf War and Desert Storm. For his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Southeast Asia Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Commander’s Letter of Commendation, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Chris was a member of the Portsmouth VFW and the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion. He retired from the United States Postal Service in Columbus, where he worked as a mail handler.

Surviving is his wife, Tina Marie Locke Wright, whom he married July 26, 1997, in Portsmouth; his mother, A. Susan Boggs of Portsmouth; his father, Beecher Emory (Sherry Lynn) Wright of Portsmouth; a son, Christopher Maxwell Wright of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a daughter, Alexis Marie Wright of Winder; a sister, Shelley Anne Nunley of Portsmouth; a half-sister, Ashley Sumpter Chestnut of Corona, CA; a stepsister, Kathy (Andy) Zamer of Portsmouth; his grandmother, Alma Beulah Wright of Portsmouth; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 A.M. at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with Rev. Orman L. Boggs officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park with military rites by the James Dickey Post American Legion Honor Detail.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. and one hour prior to services Friday.

The flag of the U.S. Navy will fly at the funeral home in honor of Mr. Wright’s service to our country.
