⛽ Busy Night at Burg Gas Stations: Domestic Dispute, Shoplifting, and a Second Chance

WHEELERSBURG, OH — Scioto County Sheriff's deputies had a busy night at two different Wheelersburg gas stations, responding first to a reported domestic disturbance and later to a shoplifting complaint that ended with the suspect being connected to addiction treatment instead of jail. 👊 Witness Reports Woman Slapped Husband Just after 1 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the Sunoco on Center Street after callers reported a man and woman involved in a physical altercation. When deputies arrived, they spoke with the husband, who said he and his wife had been arguing but insisted nothing had become physical. Deputies observed no visible injuries, and the man declined to provide a written statement, saying he was upset someone had called police and did not want a report. However, the reporting party told deputies he witnessed the argument and believed the woman had slapped the man in the face before leaving the scene. Deputies also spoke with a gas station employee, who confirmed seeing the couple arguing but said he did not witness any physical contact. When deputies questioned the husband again about the allegation, he again denied being struck and maintained that the incident had remained verbal. With no victim willing to cooperate and no evidence of an assault, deputies cleared the call without making any arrests. 🛒 Alleged Shoplifter Gets Help Instead of Handcuffs Later, deputies were called to another Wheelersburg gas station after the owner reported a man had been caught on surveillance video allegedly stealing from the business. Rather than requesting criminal charges, the owner asked deputies to formally trespass the man from the property. After locating him, deputies issued the trespass warning. Recognizing that the man was struggling with issues beyond the shoplifting allegation, deputies also contacted the Quick Response Team (QRT). Counselors responded and met with the man, offering assistance and resources aimed at addressing addiction and other underlying issues. ⚖️ Enforcement and Intervention The two incidents illustrate the different roles deputies often play during a single shift. In one case, they investigated a possible domestic violence incident but were unable to move forward because the alleged victim denied any assault had occurred. In the other, deputies enforced the property owner's wishes while also connecting an individual with recovery professionals in hopes of preventing future encounters with the criminal justice system. Increasingly, local law enforcement agencies are pairing traditional policing with outreach efforts through programs like QRT, recognizing that many repeat calls involve underlying addiction, mental health, or social service needs.
