It was a busy day for Portsmouth Police as officers spent the day chasing down a string of vehicle thefts and break-ins reported all over town. From early morning calls to afternoon headaches, it was a reminder that sometimes locking up just isn’t enough.
Here’s What Happened
8:00 AM – Glover Street: A caller reported someone broke into their Jeep overnight and made off with several items. Officers took information for a theft report.
8:45 AM – 5th Street: Another resident woke up to find their entire vehicle missing. Police took a report and began checking nearby streets and license plate readers.
11:00 AM – 19th Street: Yet another report of items stolen from a vehicle. Police documented the theft and added it to the growing list of car-related crimes.
2:30 PM – Route 140 Park & Ride: A commuter came back to find their vehicle gone after leaving it overnight. Officers took information for a stolen vehicle report.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Ride
Car break-ins often happen in well-traveled areas and even in daylight. While there’s no foolproof way to stop a determined thief, a few simple steps can help:
✅ Lock your doors — even if you’re stepping away for “just a minute.”
👜 Take valuables with you (or at least hide them out of sight).
💡 Park in well-lit areas when possible.
📸 Install a camera or dash cam — thieves hate being on video.
🔑 Never leave your keys or fobs inside — even for a quick warm-up run.
