Carol Lorraine Schmid

Carol Lorraine (Meenach) Schmid, 88 of Wheelersburg, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 16, 2025 surrounded by family. She was born December 20, 1936, in Scioto County, a daughter of the late Noah Thomas and Lois Lorraine (Gilliand) Meenach.

She graduated from Jackson High school in the class of 1955. She married Paul Oberley in 1957. Carol proudly attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portsmouth, Ohio, graduating in 1958 and becoming a registered nurse in 1959.

Carol was married to Paul Oberley for 30 years and had two children, Tony and Anna Katherine. Carol deeply valued her education and work as a nurse and then as a nurse-educator. She cared for various populations throughout her career as a nurse, team leader, Director of nursing at various institutions including Mercy Hospital in Portsmouth, Scioto Memorial Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and various nursing homes and clinics. As Carol grew in her career, she continued on to become a teacher of aspiring nursing assistants at the Scioto County Joint Vocational School in Lucasville, Ohio. Later she would work in the infirmary of both the Scioto County Correctional Facility and Lockheed Martin from which she retired as a nurse.

Carol was a beloved figure in her community. Family was the heart of Carol’s world, and she nurtured those bonds with unwavering dedication and quiet grace, ensuring that her loved ones remained closely connected. She was adored by her four grandchildren, Daryl, David, Jessica, and Justin. Her guidance and lessons will continue to live on in the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Wheelersburg United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School for many years at the Minford United Methodist Church.

Carol is survived by two children, Tony (Sam) Oberley; Katherine (Mike) Collier; four grandchildren Daryl Oberley; David (Leanna) Oberley; Jessica (Cristóbal) Clemente; Justin Brown; 9 great grandchildren; and two sisters Janice Reed, and Sandra Joseph; and a brother, Danny (Julie) Meenach. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Gerald Windell Meenach; and by husband Esta Allen, Jr. and husband Albert G. Schmid.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday July 22, 2025 at Erwin-Dodson-Allen Funeral Home in Minford with Pastor Perry Prosch officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Online condolences may be sent to www.edafh.com.
