Catnapping? Neighbor Accused of Dumping Missing Cat Miles From Home

A neighborhood dispute over missing cats escalated into a sheriff’s office investigation after a South Point woman discovered her missing pet had allegedly been dropped off miles away near a busy shopping area in another state. And while most people think of cats and dogs as family members… the law often treats them very differently. According to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to South Point after a woman claimed her neighbor had taken her cat and abandoned it near Texas Roadhouse in Ashland, Kentucky. The woman told deputies her cat had disappeared after getting outside. She said she became suspicious after questioning her neighbor and asking whether security cameras would show him placing the cat into his vehicle. According to the report, the neighbor allegedly admitted he had done so. The woman later located the cat through social media after someone found it wandering near the restaurant area in Ashland. Deputies say the neighbor admitted capturing and relocating the cat but claimed he believed it was feral because of the number of stray cats in the neighborhood. The man reportedly told investigators the cat had been digging around his birdhouse and that he lured it with food before removing it from the area. He also stated he did not realize the cat belonged to anyone. The situation became even more complicated when another neighbor told deputies several of her own cats had mysteriously disappeared over the past few months. That neighbor said she had allowed her cats to roam freely and only began suspecting what happened after hearing about the latest incident. Deputies collected written statements from multiple neighbors and forwarded the case to prosecutors for review. Why Pet Disputes Get So Messy Cases like this often become emotional quickly because many owners view pets as members of the family. But legally? Animals are generally considered property under Ohio law. That means disputes involving: missing pets rehoming animals relocation or taking someone else’s pet can potentially become criminal or civil matters depending on the circumstances.
