CDC: prepare for Coronavirus to get bad

“We are asking the American public to prepare for the expectation that this might be bad.”

It’s not a question of if but when a coronavirus epidemic hits the U.S. That’s what top Center for Disease Control official Dr. Nancy Messoniere said during a teleconference that I listened in on this afternoon.

She said Coronavirus is very close to becoming a pandemic across the world. It’s becoming harder and harder to trace where new infections are coming from.

Messoniere said the U.S. has tried to contain the virus by restricting travel and isolating those infected. She says the goal is to slow the spread of the virus and give the country more time to prepare. She said it’s working so far but that containing it becomes harder and harder. She said there is no vaccine against the virus and no medicine to treat it.

There have also been issues with test kits sent to local health departments. Dr. Messoniere called that frustrating and assured the public the CDC was working on it.

She suggested parents contact their children’s school now and check as to what the plans are if there’s an outbreak in their area.

So far 80,000 people worldwide have been infected. Just over a dozen of those cases were in the United States. Around 2,700 have died. Most of those victims were older or had pre-existing health issues. The best way to prevent the spread of the virus is to remember to wash your hands frequently and for those who show symptoms to wear a face mask to prevent spreading germs.
