A young child wandering alone through a neighborhood prompted a response from deputies and a call to Children’s Services after concerned residents stepped in to help.

Scioto County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Preston Street after callers reported seeing a child walking around the neighborhood by themselves for an extended period.

Concerned for the child’s safety, neighbors brought the child onto their porch while waiting for deputies to arrive.

Just minutes later, a man called 911 with a startling admission.

He told dispatchers he had fallen asleep for a nap and, when he woke up, realized he could not find the child.

Deputies responded to the scene, reunited the child with family members, and contacted Children Services to report the incident.

According to the report, Children’s Services advised they would not be responding to the scene, but would instead follow up with the family at a later time.

Deputies were instructed to return the child to the family and completed a report documenting the incident.
