Coleman Squashes Retirement Rumors, Takes Charge of Commissioners

Cathy Coleman is the new Chair of the Scioto County Commissioners, effectively squashing claims made after the last election that she was planning to retire.  Her fellow commissioners appointed her chair during Monday’s organizational meeting.

Coleman led the commissioners in prayer to kick off Thursday’s meeting before getting down to business approving expenditures such as $706,000 for a new equipment shed, approving the acceptance of $100,000 in federal money from ARPA Funds, and changing the mileage reimbursement rate for county employees, and opened bids for replacing multiple bridges around the county.

Back in November, Scioto County Democratic Party Chair Colin Docterman caused a stir when he made a Facebook post that read, “Congratulations to Commissioner Coleman on her early retirement. Republicans don’t play fair. We’ll find a way to win ANYWAY.”

Chairman Docterman posted that early retirement was “a well-traveled scheme” that he’d outlined before. That a commissioner could retire early to ensure that party members would pick their replacement instead of the voters.

This prompted Coleman to announce she planned to run for re-election in 2024 immediately.

Docterman later removed the post and said that her early retirement was “ “a well-traveled rumor” by the time it got to him.”
