Commissioners Not Concerned About Uncontested Races

With a large number of candidates running unopposed throughout the county for the upcoming election, SCDN asked Scioto County Commissioners if they would encourage more people to run for office.

It turns out the commissioners don’t necessarily think that only having one candidate is a bad thing. They say it’s better than having the wrong people running for office.

Commissioner Scottie Powell said, “I think it’s important that you are not just encouraging just anybody to get out and run for the sake of running. It’s important they have the right skill set and understanding of what the position is.”

Powell said people often don’t understand what the elected positions are and what they can and cannot do in office. “A lot of times people want to run for public office because they think that there’s some sort of authority attached to certain positions. Then when they get there, they find out pretty quick that’s not the case.  Before you just encourage people to run, I would encourage them to look into the positions and what authority those positions have.”

Powell said potential candidates must assess if they have the skillset, time, energy, and family approval before deciding to run for office. “I’m not a fan of encouraging people to run for the sake of having somebody on the ballot.”

Commissioner Bryan Davis agreed. “I think a person should look at their motivation. Whether they have an ax to grind or they want to actually do something.”

Davis suggested those with political ambitions get involved first by attending public meetings and asking lots of questions. “Learn about the position. Get involved civically in your area.”

Davis said there was a general sense of apathy when it comes to public service these days. “It doesn’t just end with public office. It’s also happening with volunteerism.”

The commissioner said it was admirable to stand up to represent others, but people should think it over first. “Really make sure this is what you want to do. Don’t let it be an emotional decision. You’ll have to eventually come to grips with the facts on the ground. It’s a noble thing.”

Commissioner Coleman said she agreed with Davis and Powell, and she also encouraged citizens to research candidates before voting.
