Two separate 911 calls about an older gentleman walking city streets Thursday afternoon sparked concern from residents and drew a quick response from police.
Around 1:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to Jackson Avenue and Brown Street after a caller reported an elderly man appearing incoherent. He was last seen heading north wearing black dress pants and a blue shirt. Police located him a short time later at 4th and Brown. He told officers he was simply making his way to Temple Baptist Church on Gallia Street to speak with his pastor. “It’s a long walk for an old man,” he admitted with a chuckle, though he was alert and able to answer questions.
Roughly an hour later, police were called again — this time to Robinson and Hutchins — for another report of an elderly man walking toward Goodwill. Officers checked on him and again confirmed he was fine.
What To Do If You See Someone Struggling
Police say these calls highlight the importance of community watchfulness, especially for seniors who may appear lost, confused, or exhausted. While in this case the man was fine, they encourage residents to:
- Call 911 if in doubt. If someone appears disoriented, weak, or in danger, it’s always best to alert authorities.
- Approach kindly. A simple “Are you okay?” can go a long way, but don’t pressure or crowd the person.
- Look for ID or medical alerts. Many seniors wear bracelets or carry cards indicating medical conditions.
- Offer help if appropriate. Sometimes offering a seat, water, or calling a family member can prevent further risk.
