Coroner Investigates Death After Deputies Discover This

A welfare check at a camper ended with a death investigation after deputies discovered a man deceased inside and found suspected drug paraphernalia scattered throughout the residence. The cause of death has not yet been determined, and investigators are awaiting the results of toxicology testing. Deputies were called after a friend went to check on a man he had not heard from for several days. According to the report, the friend entered the camper and discovered the man unresponsive before calling 911. When deputies arrived, they entered the camper to identify the deceased and begin their investigation. Almost immediately, investigators noticed suspected drug paraphernalia lying on the floor near the body. Because of those observations, the Lawrence County Coroner's Office and the county Drug Task Force were requested to respond, and the investigation shifted toward the possibility of an overdose-related death. During an initial walkthrough of the camper, deputies located multiple cut drinking straws containing what appeared to be drug residue near where the man was found. Investigators then conducted a more detailed search of the residence. According to the report, deputies recovered a plastic bag containing a crystal-like residue, a small glass container with similar residue, a metal container holding what appeared to be a crystal-like substance, and a cellphone. All of the items were collected as evidence and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators also collected DNA evidence at the scene, while the coroner gathered additional samples that will be submitted for forensic testing. According to the report, the friend who discovered the body told deputies the man had recently allowed a woman to stay in the camper, but he had not seen her recently and did not know where she might be. Deputies later located several personal items inside the camper bearing the woman's name. Investigators say they plan to follow up with her as part of the investigation to determine what information she may have about the man's final days. After the scene was processed and photographed, the coroner authorized the body to be released to a local funeral home for transport. All suspected narcotics evidence was turned over to the Lawrence County Drug Task Force for further investigation and laboratory testing. At this time, authorities have not announced an official cause or manner of death. Overdose Death Investigations Take Time When suspected narcotics are found near someone who has died, investigators cannot automatically conclude an overdose occurred. The coroner must consider the medical history, examine the scene, review evidence collected by investigators, and wait for toxicology results before determining the official cause and manner of death. That process can take several weeks, and in some cases, months before final findings are released.
