Coroner Investigates Mysterious Death After Neighbor Makes Grim Discovery

What began as a simple welfare check ended with deputies, the coroner, firefighters, and investigators spending hours piecing together the final moments of a man found dead on his property. Authorities stress that the death remains under investigation, but early evidence at the scene pointed investigators toward one possible explanation. Deputies were called to a home in the Proctorville area after a neighbor was asked to check on a man who had not been heard from all day. According to the report, the man's wife was out of town and became concerned when repeated attempts to reach him went unanswered. She contacted a trusted neighbor and asked him to check on the residence. The neighbor told deputies he entered the home using a code provided by the man's wife but found no one inside. While searching the property, he opened the door to a nearby metal building and made the grim discovery. The man was found slumped over a riding lawn mower that was still running. The neighbor told investigators he attempted to move him and check for signs of life but quickly realized something was terribly wrong before calling 911. Emergency personnel responded but determined the man had died before help could arrive. As deputies secured the scene, investigators began documenting every detail. According to the report, the lawn mower was found with an empty fuel tank, and there was a strong odor of gasoline inside the building. Investigators also observed blood pooled beneath the mower, along with visible injuries, burns, blisters, and swelling on the victim's body. Deputies photographed the scene, including the lawn mower, surrounding evidence, and the condition of the building. Firefighters checked the structure for carbon monoxide after the mower was shut off. By the time testing was performed, the reading was zero, although first responders had earlier reported observations consistent with possible carbon monoxide exposure. The Lawrence County Coroner's Office responded to conduct an independent death investigation. Family members told investigators the man was generally in good health, took no regular medications, and had recently been preparing for an upcoming trip. According to the report, relatives said they knew of no reason he would intentionally harm himself. With permission from family members, investigators conducted a careful search of the residence looking for anything that might explain what happened. Among the items documented were electronic devices, personal belongings, damp clothing in a bathroom, and other objects investigators believed warranted further examination. Deputies also noted the home's security camera system had been turned off sometime the previous evening. Investigators expanded their search beyond the property. A nearby homeowner allowed deputies to review footage from a porch security camera overlooking the area. According to the report, the video showed no unknown vehicles or suspicious visitors arriving at the residence during the time period investigators believed the death occurred. The neighbor who discovered the body also told investigators the riding mower normally shuts off if the operator leaves the seat, a detail that became part of the investigation. As funeral home personnel prepared to remove the body, investigators recovered additional evidence that had been hidden beneath it, including a notebook. Deputies also collected the man's cellphone and smartwatch as evidence. Later, investigators were able to access data from the smartwatch, which recorded what appeared to be the wearer's final heart-rate activity hours before the body was discovered. The official cause and manner of death will ultimately be determined by the Lawrence County Coroner's Office following its investigation and any additional forensic testing. Why Death Investigations Can Take Time Even when investigators believe they have an early indication of what may have happened, every unattended death is treated as a death investigation until evidence rules out other possibilities. Investigators routinely document the entire scene, interview family members and neighbors, review surveillance footage, collect electronic devices, and wait for the coroner's findings before reaching a final conclusion.
