Crash Call Unravels Into a Roadside Saga

Sometimes a police report tells a fairly simple story. This is not one of those reports. What began as a call about an injury crash on County Road 26 turned into a complicated tale involving a man in the roadway, a pickup truck, an alleged deliberate hit, an argument over a woman, threats, conflicting stories and a deputy trying to determine whether he was investigating a traffic accident or an assault. SCDN unraveled the saga from several pages of the Lawrence County Sheriff's report. Since no one was arrested, we're leaving the names out. First, There's a Man in the Road The deputy initially responded after a report of an injury crash. A witness said he had been traveling on County Road 26 behind another vehicle when he saw a man lying in the road. According to the report, the witness stopped and attempted to help. But this apparently wasn't simply a pedestrian who had been accidentally struck. The injured man said he had been hit intentionally. And that's where things started getting complicated. Enter the Pickup Truck According to the injured man's account, the trouble involved another man driving a pickup truck. The two men apparently knew each other, and the dispute involved a woman. The injured man claimed the pickup driver deliberately struck him with the vehicle. He also described threats and an increasingly hostile confrontation. The deputy began trying to sort out who had been where, who had said what and, most importantly, whether the truck had actually been used as a weapon. Other people offered their own accounts. Those accounts did not neatly match. Everybody Has a Version As the deputy interviewed the people involved, the incident became less like a straightforward crash investigation and more like a puzzle. One version portrayed the injured man as the victim of an intentional attack. Another portrayed his own behavior as aggressive and confrontational. There were allegations involving threats and previous trouble between the people involved. The deputy also learned there had been an ongoing dispute involving a woman. At one point, the report describes the injured man making threatening remarks of his own. Meanwhile, the deputy was still left with the central question: Did someone actually use a vehicle to deliberately hit another person? The Deputy Keeps Digging The investigation didn't end at the roadside. The deputy spoke with additional people in an effort to reconstruct what happened before the injured man ended up on County Road 26. One witness described seeing the pickup involved in the incident. Another provided information about the argument leading up to it. The deputy also tried to determine whether the physical evidence matched the various stories being told. But every new conversation seemed to add another layer. The people involved disagreed about the confrontation, who had been aggressive and what the driver intended when the vehicle and injured man came together. Even the sheriff's report acknowledges the possibility that a vehicle had been used to strike someone while making clear that the deputy could not simply accept one person's version over another. So Who Was the Victim? That's the question the report never cleanly answers. There was an injured man. There was a vehicle. There was clearly a confrontation. There were accusations that someone had deliberately used that vehicle against another person. There were also counterclaims about threatening and aggressive behavior. What deputies did not have by the end of the report was a simple story in which everyone agreed about what happened. The deputy documented the conflicting statements and continued the investigation. No arrest is listed in the sheriff's report, and SCDN is not identifying any of the people involved. For now, what began as an injury crash remains something considerably more complicated: a roadside saga in which deputies were left trying to determine whether they were dealing with an accident, an assault, or some combination of everything that happened before the wheels stopped turning.
