The 73-year-old man accused of murdering 40-year-old Shurvonn Byrd has once again been indicted by the Scioto County Grand Jury for aggravated murder, but is he competent to stand trial?
Danny Vanhoose was originally indicted for aggravated murder at the end of January and his attorneys requested a sanity hearing originally set for April 1, but that hearing was cancelled, and the grand jury handed down a superseding indictment during their latest session. Vanhoose is now due in court on that day to be arraigned.
Back on January 24, Byrd’s mother contacted 9-1-1 and said she’d found her deceased daughter covered in blood on the floor of Danny Vanhoose’s home. Vanhoose was a long-time friend of Byrd’s mother.
When deputies and detectives arrived on the scene, they found Vanhoose inside the home and took him into custody without incident.
Officers contacted the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to assist them at the crime scene and interviewed witnesses.
The coroner transported Ms. Byrd’s body to Montgomery County for further forensic investigation.
Vanhoose was paroled in August of 2022 for a sentence for attempting to discharge a firearm at a home or school. He also has previous arrests for contempt and multiple DUI charges.
