Dennis W. Stewart,73, of Lucasville

Dennis W. Stewart

In loving memory of Dennis W. Stewart of Lucasville, Ohio, who peacefully departed from this world on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at the age of 73, after bravely battling Cholangiocarcinoma. Born on December 3, 1949, he was the son of the late Howard L. and E. Arlene Stewart (née Massalsky).

Dennis graduated from Knoch Junior-Senior High School in Saxonburg, Pa., in 1967. He later pursued his education at Butler County Community College in Butler, Pa., before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Slippery Rock University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Stephen H. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Dennis had a profound passion for art and education. He served as an adjunct professor of art and gallery coordinator at Ohio University Southern Campus. Additionally, he previously held the position of assistant director and curator of education at the Southern Ohio Museum in Portsmouth, Ohio.

He is survived by his wife Janet Stewart (née Dean), whom he married on July 2, 1977; they shared 46 wonderful years together. Dennis was a devoted husband, known for his kindness, wonderful sense of humor, and sharp intellect. They actively participated in local higher education, and progressive politics, and their “big hippie wedding” left cherished memories for friends and family.

Above all, Dennis was a loving father to his children, Jessie Katherine Stewart, age 26, of Barboursville, West Virginia, and William Walker Stewart, age 33, of Austin, Texas. Dennis was a sensitive and caring father who taught his children the importance of expressing their feelings and caring for their mental health. He believed that openness was a sign of strength, leaving a lasting impact on those around him.

He is survived by his brother, Les Stewart, age 70, from Lebanon, PA, who was not only his brother but also his best friend and long-time bandmate. Growing up together, they bonded over their shared love for Chiller Theater, staying up late on Saturday nights to watch it. As teenagers and young adults, they played in several bands together, with Dennis showcasing his musical talents on guitar and electric piano, while Les skillfully played the bass.

Dennis W. Stewart leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and kindness. In his final days, he found joy in the company of his family, doing the things he loved most – listening to music, playing the guitar, and watching sci-fi. He touched the lives of many, and his memory will forever be cherished by friends and family. May he rest in peace.

The funeral service for Dennis W. Stewart will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11:00 am at All Saints Episcopal Church, 610 4th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662. The service will be officiated by Father Gene Hallahan. Before the service, there will be a visitation period at the church starting at 10:00 am. Dennis’ ashes will be interned in the Columbarium of All Saints Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Dennis’ memory to SOMC Hospice, 2203 25th Street, Portsmouth, OH 45662.
