Deputies Called After Children Allegedly Left in SUV During Hour-Long Sam’s Club Shopping Trip

A shopping trip to Sam's Club ended with deputies and Child Protective Services responding after reports that two children had allegedly been left alone inside a vehicle for an extended period of time. According to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched after a caller reported two children had been sitting inside a black Chevrolet Tahoe in the parking lot for nearly two hours. When deputies arrived, they found a man and woman loading groceries into the SUV. According to the report, both initially denied leaving the children unattended. Deputies then spoke directly with the children. One child reportedly stated she had remained in the vehicle while her mother went into the store. Investigators then reviewed store surveillance footage. According to the report, video showed: the adults entering the store around 5:45 p.m. carrying only the youngest child inside and not returning to the vehicle until approximately 6:48 p.m. After reviewing the footage, deputies confronted the adults with what was seen on camera. According to the report, they then claimed: the children had phones with them and the mother had allegedly checked on them periodically during the shopping trip Because of the children’s ages and the length of time involved, Child Protective Services was contacted and responded to the scene. According to the report: one child left with her grandmother, who reportedly had custody while another child also went with family members Deputies say the mother became emotional during the investigation and insisted she was “a good mom” who had never been in trouble before. She also claimed ongoing problems with an ex-boyfriend who she believed may have reported the situation after allegedly driving through the parking lot while they were shopping. According to the report, she told deputies she currently has a protection order against the man in Kentucky.
