Deputies Launch Search for Endangered Man, Uncover Strange Trail Across Multiple States

A desperate search involving K-9 teams, phone tracking, and fears of self-harm took an unexpected turn when a missing man suddenly called authorities and told them not to worry — he was on his way to Texas. But by then, deputies had already spent hours searching for him after family members reported alarming statements, serious health concerns, and the possible disappearance of a firearm. According to the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called after a wife reported her husband missing from the home. Family members told investigators the man suffers from significant health problems, including a heart condition that reportedly leaves him with only about 40 percent heart function. Even more concerning, deputies learned he had allegedly made statements suggesting he "couldn't take it anymore" and wanted his life to end. As officers searched the residence, they reportedly discovered an empty gun holster, raising fears that he may have left with a firearm. That discovery immediately escalated the case into an endangered missing person investigation. Deputies, detectives, and a K-9 officer began searching the surrounding area. The sheriff's office deployed a certified tracking dog trained to locate missing people, while detectives worked to obtain phone records and location information. Investigators also contacted family members, including the man's mother and sister, hoping someone had heard from him. According to the report, relatives revealed this was not the first time he had suddenly disappeared after arguments at home. Family members told deputies that during a previous disappearance, he had packed his belongings and eventually traveled all the way to Florida. His sister also reported that he had been communicating online with someone through Facebook. As investigators dug through phone records, they located several calls to an unfamiliar number. Woman Says Missing Man Is Fine Detectives eventually reached a woman who identified herself as Tammy Moore. According to the report, she confirmed speaking with the missing man and told investigators he was alive, safe, and traveling through West Virginia. She also claimed: he did not have a firearm he was not attempting to harm himself and there was no immediate danger Authorities advised her they still needed direct contact with him before they could close the case. Then Came the Phone Call Before deputies could locate him in person, the missing man called Lawrence County 911 himself. According to the report, he told dispatchers not to worry about him and said he was traveling to Texas. Even after the call, investigators kept the missing person case active until they could verify his safety and whereabouts. Family members were notified that contact had finally been made.
