A deputy shot and killed a pit bull after a report that it attacked a child. The call came in just after 2:30 pm, reporting that a brown pit bull had attacked a 9-year-old child riding his bike in Chesapeake.
The child was rushed to the hospital, and officers headed to the dog owner’s home. The dog bit a deputy who deployed a taser on the animal and called a supervisor for advice on what to do next. The dog approached the officer again, and the officer shot the animal.
Animal Control arrived on the scene and captured the dog, which was alive but unable to stand. The animal control officer delivered a final shot to put the dog down.
Lawrence County Deputies also investigated another report of dogs on the attack. This time, a man said that his neighbor’s pit bulls kept killing his chickens. The dogs had gotten into the birds’ cages and killed three and injured one.
The man said deputies and the dog warden had been up their several times over this issue and he wanted something done. Deputies took information for a report.
The next day, deputies were dispatched to another home after two loose pit bulls killed a man’s turkey and attacked kittens on the property. He said the dogs ripped the head off the turkey in its pen.
Officers attempted to contact the dogs’ owner with no success. They forwarded a report to the prosecutor.
Another child was attacked by a dog while riding a bicycle, this time in Chesapeake. Witnesses said the child was riding his bike on his street when the neighbor’s dog chased him down and bit him on the leg.
The dog’s owner said she’d just arrived home when her dog jumped out of the car and ran after the children. She said the animal had been vaccinated. Deputies issued a citation for letting a dog run loose.
