Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputies tried to come to the aid of a dog in need, but were told legally there wasn’t a lot to be done.

Just after 3 pm, a caller said a dog had been left on Dutch Ridge Road in a knotted chain with no food or water.

A deputy headed to check things out and found a dog with its chain in a knot so it couldn’t move far and no food or water. They said the house appeared abandoned.

When the officer spoke to neighbors, they said the owner works out of town and comes back on the weekend to feed the dog.

When deputies contacted the Dog Warden, they were told they legally couldn’t remove the dog from private property if it was chained. She suggested the deputy contact a humane agent, but dispatch was unable to contact them.

Officers asked the Dog Warden to bring food and water to the dog.
