A former Portsmouth resident with fond memories of her adopted hometown in the good old days has established an endowment fund to help pay for revitalization in projects in our area.
The Scioto Foundation announced the creation of The Babcock Family Fund. The fund was established by Barbara Babcock, who first moved to Portsmouth back in 1950 with her late husband, Joe Jr. He had an Optometry practice on Sixth Street for 45 years before the couple retired to Florida in 1995.
Mrs. Babcock was very active in the Portsmouth Area Arts Council during her time in Portsmouth and ran an antique shop on Sixth Street.
Her grand-daughter-in-law, Kelly Babcock, says Mrs. Babcock “Remembers Portsmouth and wants it to be the way it was in their early days here.”
Patty Tennant, Program Officer for the Scioto Foundation, said the money will be used for improvements to benefit the Portsmouth area.
The Scioto Foundation is made up of hundreds of endowment funds created by people, businesses, families, and nonprofit organizations. Ms. Tennant said the group awarded almost half a million dollars in scholarship money to area students this spring and has awarded grants to Connex to help pay for the multi-use activity path at Mound Park and to assist in developing 535 Second St. into a beautiful public space with a garden and seating among many other charitable activities.
Contributions to the Babcock Family Fund may be made by family, friends and the general public in the form of gifts of cash, securities or property at any time.
In honor of Giving Tuesday on December 3, the Scioto Foundation will partially match any gift given to a Scioto Foundation in person or online on December 3rd. Mailed contributions postmarked 11/25/2019 – 12/03/2019 will also be matched.
