Portsmouth hotel groundbreaking: Public invited

We have the answer to a question many of you have been asking.

The official groundbreaking on a new hotel in Downtown Portsmouth will take place on Friday, January 31 at the future site of the new Sleep In/MainStay hotel, the corners of 2nd, 3rd, and Washington Streets.

The ceremony will start at 2 pm and is open to the public.

Developer Ed Newsome says the 77-room hotel will open this coming fall, meaning that the construction project should move rapidly.

Newsome says the location near Shawnee State University and the historic Boneyfiddle area will make it an ideal location for people traveling for both business and pleasure.

The hotel will offer both traditional hotel rooms and extended-stay suites

The hotel will also feature free hot breakfasts and a fitness center for guests.

While some have questioned the need for another hotel just down the street from the Holiday Inn, the developer believes the time is right for a new hotel. “We are very excited to bring this hotel to Portsmouth. We are very optimistic about the culture and developments associated with this area and look forward to joining the resurgence of our area.”

There are currently several job postings listed for positions at the new hotel.
