The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man who drowned in Scioto Brush Creek on Sunday evening.

SCDN brought you coverage of the rescue and recovery efforts as the situation unfolded. Just before 7 pm, a caller contacted 9-1-1 to report a man had fallen into Brush Creek.

Witnesses said that 38-year-old Henry Hmung, from Indiana, was fishing with a friend when he fell from a log fallen into the creek between the Tatman Coe and McDermott Pond Creek split. The man swam for shore, but the current pulled him under.

First responders from multiple agencies headed to the scene and searched for the victim with a boat, drone, and dive team.

Tragically, they located the man’s body just two feet away from where he went under.

Scioto County Commissioners recently provided grants to several local townships to purchase water rescue equipment for situations just like this.  With the improvements to water access, the county is anticipating more tourists fishing and paddling and they wanted to be prepared.
