Elder Abuse Reported at Local Nursing Home
Just before 6 pm on Monday, a worried granddaughter contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office to report her grandmother was a victim of elder abuse at an area nursing home.
She said she had photographic proof and had spoken to a nurse at the facility, but they denied it. When a deputy arrived on the scene, the woman said her grandmother had been verbally abused and suffered bruising.
When a deputy spoke to the grandmother, she identified a nurse but was unable to give a name. When officers spoke to staff, they learned the person the woman accused of abusing her was actually a roommate and not a member of the staff.
Medical personnel said the bruising was the result of the woman’s medication. Officers spoke with the woman’s family and the staff, and they were able to determine that no abuse had taken place. Officers said the woman’s family seemed satisfied with the results of the investigation.
Later in the day, Portsmouth Police Officers responded to a report of an assault at another nursing home. One patient pushed another down resulting in a broken hip. Officers advised the nursing home to report the incident to the State of Ohio.
Nursing Home Patient Assaults Fellow Resident
A nursing home resident had apparently had his fill of another resident on Friday afternoon. Just before 4 pm, he asked a member of the staff if she had a shotgun he could use.
When no weapons were available, he picked up a toy containing wooden blocks and hit another patient over the head with it, cutting his head.
Staff managed to separate the two and sent the aggressor to the hospital for an evaluation. The other resident has only minor injuries. Staff advised officers that both patients were suffering from dementia.
