Elderly Man Falls – But Where’s The Ambulance?

Ambulance Shortage

Once again, Scioto County 9-1-1 Dispatch worked hard to get an ambulance to a person in need. Just after 9 pm, a call came in that an elderly man fell and needed an ambulance.

Dispatch called EMT Ohio but didn’t hear back from them. When they called back five minutes later, EMT Ohio’s Dispatch said the radio didn’t go off and they could call them.

Scioto County Dispatch called back once again to confirm the ambulance was on the way and were told it was. However, they noticed the ambulance was still at SOMC and not marked clear.

EMT Ohio said their boss had pulled a crew to cover another run. Dispatch asked again if help was on the way for the injured man. They reported having a hard time getting a straight answer before EMT Ohio admitted an ambulance was not yet there.

Just after midnight, dispatch received a call for a 65-year-old having chest pain. EMT Ohio was not available and there was no response from the closest squad. Portsmouth Ambulance did not have a crew available. A local squad was finally able to field the call.
