Family Party Ends With Bite, Brawl, and Jail Booking

What was supposed to be a family celebration ended with deputies reviewing cellphone video, one man nursing a bite wound, and an intoxicated woman being hauled off to jail. Deputies responded after reports of an assault involving multiple family members at a home in the Chesapeake area. When they arrived, they met a husband and wife who said a family gathering had spiraled out of control after one relative became intoxicated. According to the report, the husband told deputies his sister had been drinking throughout the day and eventually charged at his wife, who suffers from a seizure disorder. Fearing she could be seriously injured, he said he stepped between the two women and briefly restrained his sister in a leg lock until she calmed down. He told deputies that once he released her, she immediately came after him instead. According to his statement, he repeatedly backed away while trying to avoid a fight before she bit him on the forearm and ripped his shirt. The wife provided deputies with cellphone video of the altercation. According to the report, the footage captured yelling and screaming before showing the woman advancing toward her brother while he attempted to back away. Investigators also observed other family members entering the confrontation. At one point, another woman can allegedly be seen striking the brother in the back. After separating from him, the suspect reportedly turned her attention toward his wife and continued yelling. Deputies then made contact with the accused woman. According to the report, she appeared intoxicated, had a cut on one knee, and was unable to give investigators a clear account of what had happened. Instead, deputies say she repeatedly yelled at her brother from the front porch and continued screaming loudly enough to disturb the neighborhood. Officers warned her several times to stop. Rather than calming down, she allegedly replied: "I'm not yelling. Do you want to see yelling?" At that point, deputies placed her under arrest. In written statements, the husband said his sister "wouldn't stop fighting" and explained that he intervened because he feared for his wife's safety due to her medical condition. He told deputies he did not wish to pursue charges against two other relatives involved in the confrontation, asking only that they be warned violence was not the answer. Several other family members declined to provide written statements. Deputies photographed the victim's injuries, documented the scene, and provided him with information about victims' rights. The woman was transported to the Lawrence County Jail and charged with domestic violence. Cellphone Video Can Become Key Evidence Increasingly, family fights and neighborhood disputes are captured on cellphone cameras before law enforcement arrives. Investigators say those recordings can help establish who the primary aggressor was, corroborate witness statements, and provide prosecutors with evidence that may not be available through testimony alone. In this case, deputies cited the cellphone video as one of the key pieces of evidence reviewed during their investigation.
