Family Welfare Check Ends in Tragic Discovery

A West Portsmouth family living hours away knew something didn’t feel right. Early Sunday morning, relatives contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office after a 43-year-old man sent his sister a message containing vague statements about harming himself. His ex-wife had also received troubling messages. What began as a welfare check eventually ended with deputies entering the home and finding the man deceased. The first call came in shortly before 7 a.m. Family members told dispatchers they could not check on him themselves because they lived hours away. They also tried to help deputies figure out whether he was home by describing the vehicles that should have been in the driveway. A deputy went to the residence, knocked on multiple doors, looked through windows, and checked around the property. At first, nothing appeared obviously out of place. Only a Jeep was parked there. Family members initially thought another vehicle might also be present, but later confirmed it was in the shop following an accident. The man did not answer the door. His ex-wife also contacted authorities to report that she had received messages from him. At that stage, deputies documented that they did not yet see circumstances that allowed them to force their way into the home. But the family kept calling. Deputies Make Entry About an hour later, with concern continuing to build, deputies spoke with the prosecutor’s office about the situation. They then returned to the residence and found the front door unlocked. Once inside, deputies requested EMS and a detective. They also found two other people upstairs alive and brought them outside to the front porch while officers secured the room where the man was located. A doctor pronounced the man dead at 8:47 a.m. The Scioto County Coroner’s Office was contacted, and a transport later responded to remove the body. Deputies assisted with the transport and secured the home before clearing the scene. The available sheriff’s log does not state a cause of death. Why Welfare Checks Can Be Complicated Calls like this show how difficult welfare checks can be for both families and first responders. A concerning text message can absolutely justify asking police to check on someone, but officers generally still have to determine whether the facts in front of them amount to an immediate emergency before entering a private home without permission. That can mean knocking, checking windows, looking for signs of distress, talking with relatives, confirming vehicles, gathering more information, and consulting supervisors or prosecutors when the situation is unclear. In this case, the concern did not go away. The family kept calling. Deputies went back. And the welfare check that began with a troubling message ended with the discovery everyone had feared.
