FEMA Will Pay $9,000 for COVID Funerals

Starting on Monday, people who paid for the funeral and burial expenses of someone who died of Covid-19 will have access to expanded federal financial assistance.

Funeral expenses such as purchasing a plot, burying someone, buying a headstone, clergy services, transferring the remains, cremating these services, or other related expenses may be reimbursed up to $9,000 by the Government.

Funerals for more than one person in the same family will be reimbursed for a maximum of $35,000 by FEMA.

The death certificate must state that the death was caused by, may have been caused by, or was likely the result of COVID-19 or COVID-19-related symptoms. 

COVID-19 fatality reimbursement is limited to funeral expenses incurred for the deceased and having supporting documentation (receipts, funeral contracts, etc.) showing your name as a responsible party.

Whether you are a U.S. citizen, a national of a foreign country, or a qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after January 20, 2020, you may be eligible for the benefit.

Applications begin on April 12, 2021, and you must call 844-684-6333 (there is no online application).
