Fight Ends With Car Under Trailer, One Man Hospitalized, Another Arrested

A trip to pick up belongings turned into a wild scene at a Lawrence County mobile home park when a car ended up wedged underneath a trailer, two men exchanged punches and one of them was taken to the hospital. Lawrence County deputies and a Proctorville Police officer responded after dispatchers received reports of a vehicle striking a home and two men fighting. When officers arrived, they encountered Isaiah White, who appeared winded and told deputies he had been struck by the vehicle before the crash. White told deputies his sister-in-law had arrived with her boyfriend, Devaughn McKinney, despite previously being told not to come to the residence. White said he approached McKinney, who was sitting behind the wheel, and alleged McKinney struck him with the car before crashing into a nearby trailer. White said the two men then fought, telling the deputy they both “got a few good shots” in before separating. As deputies spoke with White, he doubled over and began vomiting. An ambulance was called, and White was transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington for evaluation. Witness: Car Was Underneath the Trailer A neighbor told deputies she heard a loud crash and came outside to find a silver car crashed into a trailer and two men fighting. She also reported seeing an infant leave in the car, though investigators later received conflicting information about whether the child had actually been inside the vehicle during the crash. The owner of the damaged trailer gave deputies an even more dramatic description. He said he was inside when his home suddenly “jumped up and sideways.” When he went outside, he reported seeing a silver Hyundai Elantra buried underneath the trailer up to its windshield, while two men fought nearby. The homeowner photographed the vehicle’s distinctive Ohio license plate — K3NDRA — before the badly damaged Elantra backed away and left. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers located the vehicle a short distance away. Two Very Different Stories The woman traveling with McKinney told deputies White was the aggressor. She said White attacked McKinney while the Elantra was still in drive and tried to choke him. She also denied that her infant son had been inside the vehicle, saying the child was with a babysitter. The babysitter told deputies she had been watching the child for about an hour while the couple went to retrieve the woman’s belongings. McKinney gave a similar account after being advised of his rights. He told deputies he had remained outside in the car while his girlfriend went inside for her belongings. According to McKinney, White came outside, cursed at him, punched him in the face and at one point placed him in a headlock so tightly that he nearly passed out. McKinney acknowledged that the two then fought. Despite the conflicting accounts of how the confrontation began, deputies ultimately arrested Devaughn McKinney. He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail. The sheriff’s report does not specify the charge filed against McKinney.
