Flatwoods Police Officer Shot

A shooting involving a police officer occurred on E Street in Flatwoods, KY, and the Kentucky State Police were notified.

As Troopers arrived on the scene, they learned that Flatwoods Police Department received a report that there was something suspicious going on in Bay Berry Townhomes.

Officer Tommy Robinson arrived on the scene and encountered Jonathan Smithers (DOB 12-21-1980). Officer Robinson was shot in the neck shortly after making contact with Mr. Smithers. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Immediately following the shooting, Officer James Sparks administered first aid. A manhunt ensued as Officer Robinson was transported to a hospital in Cabell Huntington. At this time, it was learned that a female at Flatwoods SuperQuick had been assaulted by Mr. Smithers. She managed to elude Mr. Smithers and hide in the Flatwoods SuperQuick.

After the search continued into the early morning hours, Trooper Hartsell observed a subject walking near Argillite Road that closely matched Mr. Smithers’ description. After Trooper Hartsell made contact with Mr. Smithers, the suspect ran across Argillite Road and through the Dollar General parking lot to elude him.

Trooper Hartsell pursued the suspect and deployed his Taser, which was effective. Mr. Smithers was taken into custody without further incident.

Mr. Smithers fell and sustained a laceration to the forehead after using a Taser. Greenup EMS provided immediate treatment.

Following more treatment at Kings Daughters Medical Center, Smithers was released and lodged in Boyd County Detention Center, where he was charged with fleeing or evading police, 1st degree (on foot), resisting arrest, possession of substance 1st degree, 1st off (methamphetamine), possession of marijuana, and promoting a minor (U/16) in a sexual performance.

As part of the investigation into the attempted murder of Officer Robinson, Sergeant Cramer is handling the case. A thorough investigation will determine if additional charges will be filed.
