Portsmouth Police responded to the intersection of Pyle and Bosner in Sciotoville to lend a hand to workers from Columbia Gas while they fixed a leak.
Workers found a large leak at the intersection and began to dig. However, they were working on a blind curve and nearly got hit by a car.
Officers headed to the scene to control traffic before workers had to stop for the night and wait for a welding crew. They moved their equipment off the road and waited for another crew to arrive.
Officers told them they might be short-handed to help with traffic in the morning. Columbia Gas said they also had flaggers on the way to assist with traffic.
